The National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing conducted in 2007 found that an estimated 1 in 5 (20%) Australians aged 16–85 experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months (ABS 2008). A mental illness can be defined as ‘a clinically diagnosable disorder that significantly interferes with a person’s cognitive, emotional or social abilities’ (COAG Health Council 2017).
The term itself covers a range of illnesses including anxiety disorders, affective disorders, psychotic disorders and substance use disorders. With 20% of the Australian population experiencing a mental illness in any given year, overwhelming research has shown that physical activity is not only an effective part of treatment alongside standard care but can also help protect against future episodes of depression, Anxiety and stress.
The benefits of exercise on mental health include: improved memory, focus and thinking skills; improved sleep; reduced stress and anxiety; and prevention against depression and other mental health conditions. It also incorporates the opportunity to be social with others and can be a handy distraction tool from negative thoughts.
